Chris Carney Bio

Tyson Jones

“The Visionary” Tyson Jones: the man, the myth, the bowling legend. A true visionary in the world of pins and balls, Tyson can be as polarising as pineapple on pizza among his peers, but with the heart of a champion and the mind of an innovator, he's not afraid to throw down with the best of them, both on the lanes and off. Tyson has taken the game that shaped him, challenged its norms, and catapulted the NQ bowling scene to new heights. Now, with his sights set on the national stage, he's rolling with the big dogs, bringing change and disruption in his wake. It hasn't always been a smooth ride; support has waned and friendships have been tested. But like any good bowler, Tyson knows how to handle a split. He's proven that doing the right thing isn't always easy but always worth it. So, where will Tyson's journey take him next? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure - we're all on the edge of our seats, ready to cheer him on to the next level.

Belinda Jones

“ The Boss” Behind every good man is a great woman and truer words cannot be spoken enough about Bee. Tyson’s wife and rock through whatever the sport, its people and life throws at them. Supportive when needed and there to tell him to pull his head in more often than not. Belinda’s been a state team manager for over a decade and is well versed in the politics within the sport and junior bowling especially. As well as raising and following daughters Chloe Clague (Jones), Lilly Wilson and Sophie Jones to tournaments around the country and overseas, more recently Belinda has been a integral part of the Cornerpins family with adding chief scorer and live streaming apprentice to her resume. Let there be no doubt in anyones mind, CornerPins dream for the sport is more often than not Belindas nightmare, however, she is supportive nonetheless. Without her support, Tyson and Frank wouldn’t have the luxury of bowling and chewing the fat with the constituents and would be stuck behind the tournament desk at all times. Belinda's nurturing and no nonsense nature is a cornerstone of CornerPins and will continue to be in all future endeavours.

Morty Douglass

“ The Skipper” Like any great love story from NQ, Morty and Tyson’s combination can be traced back nearly 20 years to after tournament beverages after a Suncity Open in Townsville with the one and only Shane Rossberg. Morty,Tyson and Shane on this occasion drew a concept for a bowling bar they would one day own on a napkin. Whilst the napkin has long since been lost, the core values of the ideals to continue to better and change the sport has not wavered. Morty's dedication to the sport, as an Ex-Australian team member, multiple singles champion, multiple Rachuig winning captain for Queensland with well over 400 Games in Walter Rachuig, as well as being on the TBAQ board for over a decade and successfully running multiple state championships, can never be questioned. Those without his vision generally get left in his wake as he continues to move the sport into the next generation without being caught up by the chain that is “ but its always been that way” Love him or Hate him, one thing you can never question his loyalty to those who are loyal to him and the sport that has become his life. A proud addition to the Cornerpins family with Morty by his side there is no limit to what Tyson and the Cornerpins Team can achieve. ( and the trouble they could find themselves in)

Frank Nucifora

“The Politician” NQ Bowling Royalty. His family opened Burdekin Bowl in the Far North farming town of Ayr, just 50mins south of Townsville. Ever since young Frank was old enough to throw a ball, the left handed champion has kicked up as much trouble as he has ball return covers. Whilst being a couple of years older than Tyson and being in 2 different generations of junior bowling in NQ, the two struck an unlikely life long friendship over both missing a cut for the Cairns Open in their late teens. Watching others bowl finals and remonstrating each others lack of talent fused a bond that would continue throughout the years. Whilst Frank mellowed slightly (to the collective sighs of ball returns everywhere) since the birth of his twin children with wife Bronwyn, His passion for the sport and the family business has only increased. Whilst you can definitely hear him whinging that Tyson Takes him away from his fishing opportunities, Frank adds the ying to Tyson’s Yang. The Tour, The Vision, and the relationships would be nothing without Franks easy going, friendly nature and business acumen.

Nick Devaney

“The Thinker” The lucky left hander from Cairns grew up in Cairns, North Queensland and in his early 20s worked with John Carr in Cairns bowl. His knowledge of machines is second only to his love of friends and family. Nick moved to Townsville over a decade ago and in his bowling and work at Kirwan Tenpin and Squash developed friendships with Frank and Tyson. Whilst Nick moved on to work at Kingpin he found himself back managing the newly named Townsville Tenpin and Fun Center under Noel ambler about the time of the first Lexus of Townsville Suncity Open. Throwing his heart behind Tyson's vision for a grand tournament as manager he worked extra hours to go back to his roots and extensively clean the machinery from head to toe to make sure it was ready. After his tenure ended at the bowl he found himself working with Tyson for a year which actually led to some long winded conversations around the tournaments, the tour and a partnership to run everything. His overthinking nature enables him and Tyson to look at every possible angle of what was to come. The name Corner Pins Standings was developed in the heat of the day during a lunchbreak in the site shed on a construction site, sent to Frank for approval and the rest they say is history. Whilst Nick having had 2 beautiful young boys with wife Megan has stepped aside for career and family duties, you can be assured that wherever there is an event with Cornerpins Name attached to it, Nick Devaney will never be far away.

William Gardiner

“The Mouth” “Billy” as he is affectionately known to the bowling fraternity has carved his name into the annuls of Australian Bowling Folklore. His Impressive Singles Resume Speaks for itself. Junior President Shield Champion 2 times ( NSW), 1988 Junior Sydney cup (first to average 200+ in this tournament), 1988 Coca Cola Junior champion, 1989 Junior South Pacific Champion, 1989 Junior Melbourne Cup Champion, 1990 Lismore masters ( first adult win), Cool Foam Champion, Won 3 Straight WA Open titles, Perth Cup Champion with 2 x 300 games in the same tournament, Melbourne Cup 1993 and 2003, Represented QLD, WA, and NSW in Rachuig. His generous sponsorship of Junior Tournaments, The Q Tour North, His ball by ball commentary of all NQ Live Tenpin Events and his dedication as a Silver Plus local, State and National coach has Introduced Billy Gardiner to a new generation of tenpin bowlers around Queensland and Australia.

How this all Started

The Beginning

Corner Pin Standings began as the Brainchild of Tyson Jones, Frank Nucifora and Nick DeVaney. They along with Major Sponsor Christopher Carney developed a plan to revitilise the sport of tenpin bowling in North Queensland.

First Event

It began in 2018 With Tyson Jones Working with then Owner Proprietor Of Townsville Tenpin and Fun Center to Rejuvenate the “Sun City Open” that was a long standing Open Adult Bowling Tournament Held at the Old Mount Louisa Lanes (also Currajong Super Bowl) in the 90’s and 2000’s. The First year Scott Purcell and the team at Joyce Mayne Townsville were the Major Sponsors through their Business dealings With Tyson and Belinda Jones’ Local Construction Company CLS Constructions NQ.

Chris Carney Factor

In 2019 Chris Carney and Lexus of Townsville took over the Major Sponsorship of the tournament To Increase the offered Prize money and aided Tyson in implementing some new features for the viewing public at home with Live Streaming. Also In 2019 a small tournament series was created in Townsville called the Townsville bowling series as a stepping stone for local bowlers to increase their exposure to tournament bowlers and hone their craft

Crisis Brings Fresh Ideas

2020 saw a break in the north and the Townsville bowling series due to covid 19. A joint discussion with Colin Linton and Carl Womack about creating some sort of state tour was met with a lot of animated discussion. It turned out Colin and Carl were thinking along the exact same lines as Tyson and his team and as a Result the Dual Q Tours were Formed. Carl and Colin had already worked out that the Q Tour South was to take over the Wide Bay tour which has been a staple of South Queensland Bowling for many years. Tyson and his team then finalised their plan to run the Mike Carney Memorial Tour, a series of open events around NQ to again expand the Tournament experience for bowlers in the north.

NQ Back on Track

Each successive year has been met with its own unique obstacles and contributions. Jeff Whitty and his team at TenpinResults have been a cornerstone to the Cornerpins Branding. Up to date scores. Transparency in the entry systems, Ease of setup and Simplr Payouts has helped for Tenpin Results and Cornerpins has become a household name in North Queensland Bowling, Along with the generous sponsor, Open Tenpin bowling has begun to thrive once again in the north, proven by the North Queensland Crocs being welcomed back into the Walter Rachuig competition by Mark Perry and Strike 3 bowling.

Strides Forward

In 2023 and opportunity was presented to Tyson and his team to take on the ANC for 2024 with Mark and Ashlee perry taking a step back. The Chance was not taken lightly and within the space of 24hrs Tyson had signed a deal and is hoping to move ELITE Teams and singles bowling into a new era. Unfortunately the founding partners of Cornerpinstandings have taken a step to the side for family Duties however with Good mate and Australian Rep and Tenpin Bowling Mainstay Morty Douglass as a Partner, and the Continued Support of Chris Carney, Belinda Jones, Frank, Nick and all the Generous sponsors, Corner Pin Standings Vision for the Future of Tenpin Bowling has never looked brighter.
